Pikachu from the Base Set, Common rarity, slabbed PSA 10. That classic artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita shows Pikachu with those rosy red cheeks, mid-stride like it’s charging into battle—simple but hits that nostalgic spot every time.
On the card text, it’s a Basic Lightning type with 50 HP. Ability? None here, but attacks keep it straightforward: Growl reduces the opponent’s next attack by 10 damage, and Thunder Jolt dishes out 30 while risking 10 to itself if you flip tails. Solid beginner stuff, nothing flashy, but it captures Pikachu’s cheeky electric vibe.
Base Set dropped in 1999 as the English debut, pulling from the Japanese Bandai cards and kicking off the whole TCG craze. This printing stands out because it’s the OG Pikachu—unlimited edition mostly, with those thin borders that make high grades a real hunt. Back then, kids were sleeving these in binders or trading at recess, not thinking about slabs. But now, it’s a cornerstone for any vintage collector, especially since Base Set had print runs that flooded the market, yet perfect copies? Not so easy with the off-centering issues from the era.
For the slab, PSA 10 means gem mint all around—sharp corners, pristine edges, and that centering has to be dead on, like 50/50 or better on all sides. Eye appeal pops with the bright yellow background and clean white borders; no whitening or print defects to drag it down. From what I recall on pop reports, PSA has graded around 1,500 of these in 10, but that’s spread across unlimited, shadowless, and 1st edition variants—unlimited being the bulk. Tough to nail a perfect one given the card stock quality back in ’99.
I’d display this front and center on a shelf, maybe next to some evos, just to relive those early pack-opening days.
