Machamp from the 1996 Japanese Base Set, holo rare, slabbed PSA 10. This one’s the classic four-armed beast, straight out of the original run that kicked off Pokémon in Japan.
The artwork shows Machamp mid-flex, all muscles and intensity, with that signature Sugimori style—clean lines, bold colors, like it’s ready to toss something heavy. Hits different in the Japanese printing, where the holo foil has that subtle sparkle without the English text clutter.
Fighting type, 100 HP. Pokémon Power: Strikes Back—if it takes damage from an attack (even if KO’d), deal 10 back to the attacker, applying Weakness and Resistance. Works even if Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed. Attack: Seismic Toss (three Fighting, one Colorless) for 60 flat damage. Weakness to Psychic times two, retreat cost three. Solid Stage 2 evo from Machoke, built for tanking and countering in early metas.
Set dropped October 1996, the very first expansion for the Pokémon TCG in Japan, before the global boom. This printing stands out because it’s pre-Wizards English era, with Japanese text and that vintage card stock—thicker, glossier than later stuff. No unlimited runs like English Base; these were limited, making holos like this a snapshot of the game’s roots. Folks chase them for the purity, especially since English 1st Edition Machamp had its own quirky distribution in starter decks.
In PSA 10, you’re looking at pristine edges, sharp corners, no whitening. Centering’s usually spot-on for these, maybe 50/50 or better, giving it killer eye appeal under lights—the holo pattern pops without overwhelming the art. Pop report wise, based on PSA data, there are around 250 graded 10s out there, not flooded like some modern stuff, but enough to hunt without total despair.
I’d keep this one in a display case, maybe next to its evo line, just to admire the old-school vibe.
